Healthy Oils as Food Supplements

Food supplements industry is flourishing. With the mass production the nutritional value of regular food has decreased significantly over the years as the only aim is to produce enough food to feed the ever-growing world’s population in shortest time possible.

Plants are prone to diseases and to combat the diseases (inorganic) fertilizers, herbicides, fungicides or pesticides are often used.

Food is not just about calories

Such food, when eaten, might provide adequate calories, but it certainly lacks essential vitamins and minerals, due to the speed up growing process and the use of chemicals.

An average meal nowadays contains 20-40% less minerals and vitamins than it did 50 years ago. Such vitamin and mineral deprivation might decrease body’s natural resistance to illnesses. This is where the food supplements come into play.

From multivitamins to fibers, from minerals to fatty acids food supplements are now a hit in modern diet. A new trend has arisen lately and that is consuming oil made from different, very distinctive ingredients as a food supplement. Oils that are now trending are hash oil, cannabis oil, hemp oil, CBD oil and many more.

What’s the benefit of adding or consuming such oil?

The benefits are many. Vitamin A, B1, B2, B3, C and D, as well as calcium and iron can all be found in such oil, not to mention the world-famous Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA, some also include unique ALA fatty acids).

The list goes on. Ear infections, various conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, chronic pain, nausea, anxiety, schizophrenia, diabetes, PTSD, strokes and cardiovascular disease are all on the list of therapeutic benefits of consuming cdb oil / hash oil / cannabis oil. Consuming high quality fatty acids will also aid in weight loss, if diet it planned correctly. A list of Omega-3 rich foods can be found here.

Food supplements are exactly that – supplements

Bear in mind that for optimal health one must eat diverse food and not rely on supplements. Taking a supplement is considered a preventive measure and not a curative measure. Your doctor might prescribe you with supplements to increase your body’s natural resistance (immune system), but never to cure an illness. For that, other drugs exists (antibiotics).

A healthy diet should consist of high amount of lean protein, moderate amount of carbohydrates and moderate amount of high quality fats. Best source of protein is lean meat such as chicken, turkey, fish meat or red meat.

For those that are not into meat that much meat-free protein sources exist. These are dairy products, nuts or some vegetables (like broccoli). For carbohydrates, low-GI foods (see glycemic index chart) are recommended to avoid blood sugar spikes.

Spotlight: Cannabidiol Oil

Marijuana does not need a special introduction due to its illegal usage in drug industry. But there is more to marijuana than THC. CBD, also known as cannabidiol, is another compound found in this plant and is lately gaining a lot of attention due to its many health benefits.

Here’s a list of medical properties of CBD.

Properties Effects
Antiemetic effect will reduce nausea and vomiting
Anti-tumoral/Anti-cancer effect will combat cancer cells and tumors
Antipsychotic effect will combat psychosis disorders
Anxiolytic/Anti-depressant effect will combat anxiety and depression disorders
Anticonvulsant effect will suppress seizure activity
Anti-inflammatory effect will combat inflammatory disorders
Anti-oxidant effect will combat neurodegenerative disorders

While CBD oil contains very little of THC it still cannot be purchased directly (or online) due to legal problems of selling products that contain THC. But this will likely change in future when restrictions will be lifted due to strong initiative to legalize marijuana and marijuana related products.

Conclusion

While food supplements will do the job of providing essential vitamins and minerals just fine you should always try to obtain vitamins and minerals from the food that you eat regularly.

As far as the use of oil goes you should consider using healthy oils in preparation of your food, or as an added extra to your salads and side dishes and only take supplements when necessary. Be creative with your food!
