What is diabetes and how to test for it

If you are not sure how to test for diabetes or you are scared, then here’s what you need to know to bypass the fear.

There are different kinds of tests for every type of Diabetes.

Diabetes types 1 and 2

Glycated Hemoglobin Test or A1C Test is a test to test for Diabetes type 1 and 2. Via this procedure, one’s blood sugar levels for the past two months are calculated and checked if it is still in the normal level. Getting a level of 6.5 percent or higher on this test means that you have Diabetes. However, if you are pregnant or suffering from any other conditions, the results of your A1C test may not be accurate and that’s why you need to undergo some other tests.

These tests are:

  • Random Blood Sugar Test. As the name suggests, a blood test will just be conducted at any given time to check your blood sugar levels.
  • Fasting Blood Sugar Test. After not eating anything overnight, this test will be conducted. If your results add up to 100 to 125 mg/dl, this means that you have pre-diabetes symptoms. Anything higher than that will mean that you really have Type 1 or 2 Diabetes.
  • Talk to your personal doctor on how to get the testing done. Doctor will provide you all the required information.

    Gestational Diabetes

This is the type of Diabetes that often afflicts people below 25 years old and pregnant women. To know if you have the said disease, you have to go through the following tests.

    These tests are:

  • Initial Glucose Challenge. First, you’ll have to drink something syrupy that contains glucose in it. After that, you will undergo a blood test. A 130-140 mg/dl level is considered normal, but anything other than that means that you have Diabetes.
  • Follow up Glucose Tolerance testing. Same as the Fasting Blood Sugar Test but you’ll also have to drink the glucose infused drink this time. If your blood sugar levels go past through the normal levels three hours after testing, then you’ll be diagnosed with gestational diabetes.
  • Now that you know how to test for Diabetes, it’s time to actually get tested yourself. Remember, prevention is always better than cure, and if you want to live a long, healthy life, then getting tested now would be a good idea.
